When the Analysis Is All N/A: The Data-Checking Habit Vietnamese Football Is Missing

At 4:22 p.m. on May 9, 2026, I opened a three-page analysis report that repeated the same word in every box: N/A. A colleague laughed and called it a server error. I did not laugh. To me, an N/A report is not an empty document. It is the moment a referee hears an offside flag but cannot see the player or the ball. In Vietnamese football, where data systems are still developing, an N/A result is not harmless. It is an honest signal that the process before the analysis failed. This article argues that journalists, editors and tournament operators need a culture of source verification and the courage to say 'not enough data' before publishing a strong conclusion. Drawing on eleven years of covering discipline and refereeing, I explain why every number must be traced back to its original source, why a misplaced card can change a season, and why VAR itself is rarely the problem; the operator of the process is. Vietnamese football does not need more technology as much as it needs professionals willing to check three times and to admit uncertainty.
